This was exactly the upgrade that I needed. I do some heavy gaming and this processor solved some FPS issues that I had been experiencing with the 8-CORE AMD processor that I used previously. The swap required that a compatible motherboard be installed. It went much more smoothly than I had anticipated. The entire system is running faster and glitch free with the i7-4790K installed.

It had been quite a while since I built a new desktop rig, and all I can say is.. holy crap, this thing is amazing. I have been an AMD guy all my life, but I loved the performance of my 3rd gen i7 laptop so much, I decided to move to intel for my desktop. This thing clocked in at just over 12,000 on the benchmark after I built it! It runs unbelievably fast and surprisingly cool using the stock air cooler. While writing this review, the temp is sitting at 38C... in other words, under a light load, it runs basically the same temperature as my body! Now, it does quickly get hot under avery heavy load (80-100 while using Handbrake for x.264 encoding), but all in all, not bad. I will likely get an aftermarket cooler in the future, but I found that if I limit CPU speed in windows to 95%, it seems to do a great job of keeping the temp

Great CPU. It had pci 16x only, so know it if you're planing to have two graphics card configuration. It will be fine, but any WiFi/sound card will need to use USB.I use it with Noctua DH-15 cooler. I turned off intel turbo boost and clocked it to run on 4.4GHz all the time. At idle it sits on 33-35C with ALL case/cooler fans OFF. When in game/benchmark it doesn't go higher that 50C with cooler fans on 45%.Overall it's great cpu, which doesn't heat up too much.
