Does what it does without issue. If it's an upgrade, then it's an upgrade. Performance can be equal to newer generation CPUs if you overclock it to around 4.7-4.8 but then they're better if you overclock them. Pretty straight forward.

I built my gaming PC earlier this year and decided to go for the 4790K over the 4690K for the higher clock speed and 4 extra threads. Both of those matter to me as I'm frequently gaming, listening to music, browsing, etc concurrently. Those extra threads and GHZ really do make a difference in a multitasking machine; especially one used for video editing or other content creation. For me, cost was not an issue. It was only $100 more than the 4690k, and for a system I expect to last me the next 6+ years, it amounts to pennies.Paired with a noctua NH-U14S, I was able to hit a 4.7 GHZ overclock on all cores at 1.248 volts. I could probably tweak this a bit, but since it's been rock solid I don't see the need to push it further. Temps have been fine as well, reaching 82* celsius on the hottest core during prime 95 26.6 after 4 hours of running it and barely breaking 50* celsius when gaming or doing anything else. There's really nothing to complain about with this processor.Though it's on its way out with the 6700K now released, if you got a 4790K within the past year there's no need for buyer's remorse. Their performance is extremely similar, so there's not a whole lot 4790K owners are missing out on.If I were building a new pc today, of course I'd go for the 6700K over the 4790K, but feel absolutely no regrets or that I'm missing out with the 4790K.System Specs:CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor OC to 4.7GHZ@1.248vCPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S CPU CoolerMotherboard: MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX AC ATX LGA1150 MotherboardMemory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 MemorySSD: Samsung 850 Pro Series 512GB 2.5 Solid State DriveSSD: Samsung 850 Pro Series 512GB 2.5 Solid State DriveHDD: Western Digital Red Pro 4TB 3.5 7200RPM Internal Hard DriveHDD: Western Digital Red Pro 4TB 3.5 7200RPM Internal Hard DriveVideo Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB FTW ACX 2.0 Video CardCase: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower CasePower Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power SupplyOperating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bitCase Fans: 4x Noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC-2000 PWM 140mm FanMouse: ROCCAT Kone Pure Naval Storm Wired Optical MouseKeyboard: Max Keyboard Blackbird Tenkeyless (TKL) Cherry MX Backlit Mechanical Keyboard with Brown Switches

Skylake might be new but does not mean it is worth upgrading. It is ok if you need a brand new computer but not for an upgrade. Buying new ram, mobo and cpu is not worth that much money for the small increase in performance. The 4790k will be a hard cpu to beat for gaming. It already has the same thermal design as Skylake and can overclock to make up a loss in its age.My old I7 870 still works like a champ and has outlasted everything else in my old computer. The I7 is great cpu for someone that does not want to upgrade every time a new one comes out because of it's top tier features.Read reviews from actual testings websites and you will see why 4790k is one of the best LGA1150 cpu's for gaming.

I love this thing. It laughs away gaming (I'm using a dedicated video card), eats photo editing for lunch, and churns through video rendering tasks like nobodies business. I won't feel the need to overclock this for a while.Oh, and the stock cooler does an alright job but that teeny tiny fan has to spin very fast and make a lot of noise. After two days of that I couldn't stand it anymore and went with a CM Hyper212 and Noctua fan. Keeps temps much cooler and the noise levels waaaay down.
