At the time of this writing there are 1,030 other reviews, many of them quite detailed, so I'll keep it brief. If you are incrementally upgrading your PC, this is the best deal going, period. Previously I was running an i5 2500k. In order to upgrade I had to purchase a new motherboard, owing to the 1150 vs 1151 cpu slot. But I was able to re-purpose my (expensive) existing 16GB of RAM. Moving up to the next level of processor would have required replacing all of my DDR3 RAM with DDR4. And the MoBo's are more expensive. I figure it would have cost me an additional $400-$500 to realize maybe 10-15% faster performance. No brainer for me.I paired it with an ASUS MoBo, this one...
ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-A/USB 3.1
. This allowed me to easily leverage the overclocking potential of the chip. Using the auto OC function of the BIOS, I have been able to achieve Passmark scores in the 12000 range, basically the same as the $100 more expensive i7-3930K (and don't forget the added costs). All in all I'm super happy with this CPU. Definitely spend the extra couple of bucks for this rather than the non-K version. It's well worth your $$$, and even if you know nothing about OC'ing, there are plenty of MoBo's that will do it for you. It's free performance.Earns my official seal of approval.

has too much heat even with adjusting the voltage, doesn't have much overhead for overclocking (Noctua NH-D15) used 1.25v at 4.5 GHz and barely stable with temps up to 90c

Stock cooler is absolutely terrible! I mean that too, A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y new word T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. Running the stock setup I saw temps over 65c. With a Corsair h100i GTX I can overclock to a nice 4.7 and never see anything north of 50c (not that I left it overclocked - stock and this cooler is a steady 35c!)If you're a power user this is a great CPU, but even then a lot of video products like Handbrake can utilize a nice GPU in lieu of a nicer CPU. Between the heat issues and price difference over an i5 ($100) I'd make sure I needed the i7. Just something to think about if you're on the fence.

I bought this to install in my custom built by me computer. I installed it in a MSI Z97A Gaming 7 motherboard. I did not use the included fan, I opted for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound to mate the fan to the processor. All in all I was very happy with the purchase. Everything installed as it should with no problems. Super fast speeds.

Really gets the job done. I'm a power user, with, typically, Outlook, Word, Excel, several browser windows, plus some serious database applications of my own, all running at the same time, and my old laptop REALLY bogged down. This processor, combined with an SSD boot drive, makes life SO much more pleasant. I've checked the Windows resource meter and I'm not even beginning to bog it down.Because I wasn't sure whether I needed it or not, I went with most internet recommendations and bought an aftermarket fan/heat sink that is much better than what comes with the processor. I don't overclock and I am now very confident that I did not in fact need that extra cooling. I think what came with the processor would have been fine and unless you are overclocking and really stressing the CPU I doubt you will either. If you do it's very easy to add one when needed.

Idles at 800 MHz and peaks at 4.4 GHz. I have a D92 Heat sink keeping it down to 51 degrees Celsius when it peaks steady for a few hours while gaming.

This has been an excellent purchase. First DIY, bought tgt with ga-85m-d3h mobo, pretty good choice for non OC user.
