I purchased this for my first custom PC. Since I just got into some research with protein modeling, I had to stray away from Apple and my MacBook Air in favor of a faster and more heat-reliable system. Since I knew I didn't want to upgrade for a few years, I spent more than I normally would have on the CPU. I figured, spend more money now but save in the long run was my best option. I have this CPU water cooled with a H90i Corsair closed-loop block, which I would highly recommend also. The stock fan was pretty loud and inefficient especially in my MATX case where heat sitting in the small case with a graphics card was just a terrible setup. In a full sized ATX case this may not be as much as an issue, but I would definitely upgrade to a high performance CPU fan at minimum (roughly 40-50 dollars), or a water cooler if you're willing to spend about 70-100 dollars. As for overclocking, I was able to get this stable at 4.7GHz and successfully stress-test for 48 hours. I can push this to 4.8GHz and 4.9GHz but it became unstable to the point it would crash and produce a lot of heat, even with water cooling. The stress testing would produce such a jump in heat within the first 10 seconds that it would crash before my water cooling system could react from the previously idle temperatures. The only wait 4.7GHz or more is sustainable is to either be extremely lucky with your CPU, since they are not all created equal but rather grouped, or run your fans at 100% at all times. The difference between 4.7GHz and 4.9GHz isn't noticeable where this would be worth it, unless your benchmarking for competitions, as I was. I couldn't obtain 5GHz at all under any conditions. Note: the maximum reliable clock speed will vary between each 4790K processor. To my knowledge, about a +/- 0.4GHz variation is possible. Some users only manage two obtain 4.4GHz why others can achieve 4.8GHz, while retaining stability. Some companies actually screen hundreds of these and sell the winning 1%, per se, that can obtain 5.0GHz, which is pretty rare to my knowledge.Overall, this processor is an extremely good buy considering the performance versus cost ratio. The LGA 1150 socket that it utilizes offers countless options for motherboards with varying price ranges. The LGA 1150 motherboards are typically less expensive than the newer LGA 2011 sockets. For me, the unlocked multiplier was the selling point. In my system, I use a MSI MATX Gaming motherboard with 4x8GB DDR3 ram sticks. The only benefit of buying a LGA 2011 socket processor, in my eyes, is the benefit of DDR4.

This thing really hauls - there's a reason you see it featured in so many gaming rigs and enthusiast desktops.

Bought for a customer, he really likes the performance for the price. Snagged it on sale which was awesome. I like my 4770k more but this did what was needed

Asus Gryphon Z9716-gig Crucial DDR3512-gig Crucial SSDAMD Radeon R7770 1-gig DDR5No issues with initial setup; the motherboard ran with it.Boot time for Windows 7 Ultimate is about 8-seconds from pressing the power button. Installing Windows took less than an hour, including installing all of the various drivers, which required frequent reboots. 4-months later system continues to fly.One thing I love: Immediately after logging into Windows, I can open Chrome and start browsing, despite other programs continuing to load in the background. On my i5 laptop, Chome will often take 30-seconds or more to load while the system finishes starting background apps.Starcraft II, Diablo III, SimCity (2013) all run with maximum graphics at 1080p resolution, without any lag, and I frequently leave chrome open on the second monitor for reference.I used the stock Intel fan and have not done any overclocking--it's just not necessary with this CPU (although I'm sure it could be fun for benchmark purposes).

So far so good. I bought this for my completely new system build after quite a bit of research. I'd buy this CPU again.

Great Processor. Have it in my gaming PC and it works like no other processor I have. Would certainly recommend.

Fast. Very fast. Noticeable upgrade from my old i3-2100. I don't do overclocking so I have no opinion in that regard. Paired with an AMD R9 290X and it eats everything alive that I throw at it. I have used Intel CPUs since the first Core 2 Duo chips came out and have always been satisfied. I would love to get an AMD some time but they just don't make processors that can be Intel for the type of build I was going for. Recommended.

Intel i7-4790K will always be good from now and for the next three years or more. Is it worth 300 USD? Let me say that price is relevant to cost of aggravations. Suffice it for me to say that no aggravation and long term satisfaction is worth something, so yes, in my opinion the i7-4790K processor is worth the cost, even if you do not plan to overclock it. Why would you buy this over the lesser yet nearly equivalent i5-4690K? If you have the need for multithreaded simultaneous operations, this processor is hands down light years faster than an i5-4690K. If you are surfing the web or playing games with your system then you probably do not need this processor and the i5-4690K is a much better economical option. Why would I buy a K rated processor over a standard version if I do not plan to overclock it? Simply because they are better processors. When processors are tested, they must pass a myriad of tests before they are marked and shipped. Every processor is guaranteed to operate within the window of specifications, so when you buy one that will outperform the window of specifications, it simply tested better overall.

Item being reviewed Intel Core BX80646I74790K i7-4790K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz).Item was new in box and as advertised. All accessory parts were included. This CPU is FAST.Does great on latest games and it's more than enough (an over-kill actually) for what the non gaming average user would use it for.Heat is not an issue with proper case and cooling even with an air only cooling solution. Mine runs low to mid 30c in idle and 50-60c under prolonged load. It's capable of doing some good over-clocking but you may want to consider liquid cooling at that point if going that route.

Love this processor so far. Was going to go with AMD FX8350 but this is worth the extra money. Haven't overclocked yet. Using this on an ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 motherboard w/ 16gb Corsair Veng Pro Ram (Will be buying 2 more sticks for 32gb) and a Samsung 850 EVO SSD. So far it's a beast.
