My goodness this thing is fast. For the last 3 years I've used a laptop with an i7-2760QM. It's a laptop processor, but it's still an i7 so I was getting decent performance. I recently built my own desktop as a development station, and chose this processor as my CPU.The delivery was very quick, it comes with its own cooling fan but you'll definitely want to go ahead and pick up an aftermarket cooler. I bought an H100i to go with it and my temps have been well below 40C even while stress testing. This thing is blazing fast. I tested all of my programs that I originally wrote and tested on my laptop and this thing increases their run-time by anywhere from %40-150. Combined with an SSD and a good graphics card and there is virtually no way to be dissapointed.

Super powerful with amazing overclocking capabilities. I have mine with a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO overclocked to 4.8 and it never goes above 60 degrees Celsius.

Fantastic cpu, i bought it and run games great. Overclocking is definately good, i got mine to a modest 4.7 @ 1.25 volts and it stays under 70 with a h105 liquid cooler. It could go more but i like staying at the cooler temps.

I am successfully running the i7-4790K 24/7 at 100% load on all 4 cores in Turbo Boost (4.4 GHz) while number crunching for the World Community Grid (WCG). The Intel heat sink and fan are inadequate with core temperatures hitting 100 deg C immediately under full load. Wattage was successfully reduced by lowering CPU Vcore to 1.150 Volts and VRIN to 1.710 Volts. The BIOS of my Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK motherboard allowed setting these voltages lower which was the first step taken to reduce CPU Core temperatures.Chosen to replace the i7-4790K stock heat sink is a Cooler Master Geminll S524 Version 2 CPU Air Cooler with 120 mm Silencio FP fan (RR-G5V2-20PK-R1). With it, typical core temperatures dropped to 70 – 72 degrees centigrade with maximum variation 67 – 74 deg C under continuous full Turbo Boost load. The software application generating the load is the BOINC client running on Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LS. Ubuntu installed from CD as easily in my rig as MS Windows The BOINC client and BOINC manager are best installed using the Linux Synaptic tool. WCG BOINC preferences allow up to 100% of CPU capacity to be used by the Grid project(s). Performance measurement and temperature use the i7z tool.

Hands down the best procceor, I've owned so far. I would upgrade to a 6-8core for my Minecraft server , but for gaming you cant beat the price and speed of this beast.

I love this thing. It destroys everything I throw at it, stays cool. This is my first somewhat pricey CPU, I've always bought mid-grade ones at best, this was a major upgrade over my old AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition.

Outstanding for single thread performance - I only upgrade every few years, and you can really feel the benefit of not only a fast clock speed but also the incremental improvements in instructions per cycle. Compared to my 5 year old dual Xeon X5670 (12 cores, 2.93 Ghz) this is about ~85% faster for single threaded tasks. For multithreaded tasks this quad-core CPU performs as my old computer using 7 cores. I do not play games, but the built in graphics are sufficient for volume rendering, and the graphics driver support for Linux seems solid. I did not overclock my unit - so I can not comment on that. However, for stock performance this is a blazingly fast CPU. I used a basic Rosewill RCX-ZAIO-92 cooler and this provides reasonable temperatures without generating much noise.
