has too much heat even with adjusting the voltage, doesn't have much overhead for overclocking (Noctua NH-D15) used 1.25v at 4.5 GHz and barely stable with temps up to 90c
Stock cooler is absolutely terrible! I mean that too, A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y new word T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. Running the stock setup I saw temps over 65c. With a Corsair h100i GTX I can overclock to a nice 4.7 and never see anything north of 50c (not that I left it overclocked - stock and this cooler is a steady 35c!)If you're a power user this is a great CPU, but even then a lot of video products like Handbrake can utilize a nice GPU in lieu of a nicer CPU. Between the heat issues and price difference over an i5 ($100) I'd make sure I needed the i7. Just something to think about if you're on the fence.
I bought this to install in my custom built by me computer. I installed it in a MSI Z97A Gaming 7 motherboard. I did not use the included fan, I opted for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound to mate the fan to the processor. All in all I was very happy with the purchase. Everything installed as it should with no problems. Super fast speeds.
Really gets the job done. I'm a power user, with, typically, Outlook, Word, Excel, several browser windows, plus some serious database applications of my own, all running at the same time, and my old laptop REALLY bogged down. This processor, combined with an SSD boot drive, makes life SO much more pleasant. I've checked the Windows resource meter and I'm not even beginning to bog it down.Because I wasn't sure whether I needed it or not, I went with most internet recommendations and bought an aftermarket fan/heat sink that is much better than what comes with the processor. I don't overclock and I am now very confident that I did not in fact need that extra cooling. I think what came with the processor would have been fine and unless you are overclocking and really stressing the CPU I doubt you will either. If you do it's very easy to add one when needed.
Best upgrade of my life. I went from a fx-6300 with a GIGABYTE motherboard to this processor paired with a Z97 MSI gaming 5 with a h100i gtx and it was no regret. Perfect for higher demanding programs and multitasking with multiple screens.
Runs pretty smoothly when playing the DEI mod of RTW2 on max settings with 10k men. It does have occasional unexplained hiccups that I think are attributable to the CPU. So far the temps are in the 30-50 range most of the time.
Upgraded from an i5-3570k, had to get a new motherboard aswell due to the LGA socket change from LGA1155 to LGA1150.Overall a very solid processor, getting a lot better FPS in high resource using games such as arma.Another reason why i buy intel!
Night and day difference between this and my previous i5-2310 2.9 GHz CPU. I used to try and avoid more CPU-dependent games like MMORPGs, high-volume online games, and open world games with large amounts of rendering. Now I have total confidence that every game I throw at my system will be more than playable.
I am writing this review on my multi-media rig. I am a casual gamer, digital illustrator, typical web surfer, film buff, and novice game-streamer on Twitch. Granted, I invested money into my motherboard, fans, gpu, sound card, etc.- this cpu makes the most sense for price to performance. I built my own rig- and it is a beast. This cpu handles all I throw at it with grace. I'm sure there are better cpus in the X99 platforms- but seriously, look at how expensive the platform is and the gains are hardly noticeable to the average consumer. If you are a gamer, surfer, streamer, and average enthusiast- this is all you need.
