Still an extremely relevant CPU even after the release of Skylake. I chose this CPU for my new gaming build and I'm very glad I did.

Kix arse, Been running since day one O'ced to 4.5 Ghz. Runs smooth on Gigabyte board and air cooled. Also Samsung EVO SSD, When I push the power button, I'm on the desktop in 18 seconds, I used to have to go make coffee and wait for old PC AMD Phenom 965 to get there.

I have this processor overclocked to 5.0GHZ @ 1.33v. I keep it cool with the  Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate 360mm AIO Enthusiast Liquid Cooling System CPU Cooler CL-W007-PL12BL-A . Temps under stress tests hit the high 60's, and temps during heavy gaming (crysis 3, FC4 ect) rarely exceed 55c. This CPU slices through games.

Bought the CPU after having a laptop with an i7 2.4ghz, this one smokes. I added the 212 evo fan to this cpu and it stays cool. When I overclock, it does get warm, I managed to pull off 4.7 but backed down to 4.4 because I did not feel the need to push a new CPU like that.If you're going to get into gaming, this is one to buy.

Always gets the job done whether it's rendering video or playing games, haven't found anything it can't handle yet. Overclocks great, definitely enthusiast grade. The stock CPU cooler that it comes with isn't that great. There are many other options that I'd highly recommend looking into. If you're going to spend $250+ on a CPU then it is worth making sure it is properly cooled. The Hyper 212 Evo, Noctua DH-N15, Corsair H100i, and Kraken X61 are popular options all with their own pros and cons. Lots of information available on all of them.

I reluctantly give this product 5 stars, not because there is anything wrong with the product itself, but instead because of the stock heatsink provided. It's horrible, to say the least.Upon booting my PC after installation the fan wound up, into what I can only imagine was the fastest RPM it could pull. During this wind up, it made the most horrible noise, as if a race car was driving through my house. Once it leveled out at roughly 37c, the fan lowered its RPM's, but it was still incredibly loud, I could hear it over the YouTube videos about replacement options for said fan. When I tried to run Rainbow Six: Siege, the CPU heated up to 105c, and averaged 100c. This was without any overclocking, 16gb RAM, and an R9 390x, plus 2 extra fans in my case.I realized that for any CPU usage, a air cooler just wouldn't do for this CPU. I immediately bought a Corsair Hydro H100i GTX. Upon installation/boot, I didn't hear a whisper of a noise. The CPU idles at around 27c, and running Rainbow Six: Siege/Assassin's Creed: Syndicate/GTA V/Fallout 4 (All on ultra settings) - the CPU never exceeded 60c, and idles around 55c for said games. So the product is incredible, it is what's on the box. The downside is, please do your research for a proper cooling solution that will fit your case. There is no way that the stock cooler will work in any condition at all, and it's literally pointless for them to include it.I debated on leaving 4 stars, because I feel that the product should be marketed in a way to let people know upfront that they will have to invest in a decent cooler (more expenses down the line) to get the product to function as intended. But, I gave it 5 stars because it's just that good of a CPU.

I don't usually go all out in my builds but this time I found a great deal on a 4790k a year back and after a year of using it I'm extremely satisfied. It handles everything I throw at it at low temperatures and with no errors I can trace to it whatsoever or any incompatabilities. I've been an AMD faithful for a long time but I just couldn't keep buying their insufficient high-end cpus any longer after my experience with the high end phenoms overheating on a liquid cooler. Intel has them beat for now, and continues to pull ahead.
